RANDA MIRZA | EMERGENCE SECTOR | Booth M03

Winner of the 2025 Camera Clara Prize for the project Atlal.

Atlal revisits the ancient Arabic poetic motif of the ruin as a site of loss, memory, nostalgia, love, and the passage of time, finding its contemporary resonance with the ongoing domicide – the widespread destructions of homes – in the South of Lebanon by the Israeli military.

Working with a large-format view camera to photograph these ruins is a slow and meditative process that recalls the pre-Islamic ritual of Arab poets who composed their verses while standing or weeping before the “Atlal”, the remnants of abandoned homes. In this encounter between the camera and the rubble, the photographer embodies the early Arabic poet, re-enacting a tradition that emphasizes a sense of attachment and connection to the place.
