Elger Esser was born in 1967 in Stuttgart, Germany, and was raised in Rome. From 1991 until 1997, he studied at Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts with Prof. Bernd Becher. Elger Esser used the technique he learned at school and added a poetic and whimsical direction to his photography. His photos are technically impeccable, very focused, and the composition is always very thoughtful. Esser is interested in “capturing and preserving subjective memories, time and tranquillity”.
Esser currently lives and works in Düsseldorf, and in 2016 he won the Oskar- Schlemmer-Prize. Esser’s work was shown at Art Basel, Miami, in 2020. Previously he has also had work exhibited in Paris Photo and Photo London in 2018, Seattle Art Fair, Art Cologne and many more. Esser’s work is exhibited at multiple institutions across the globe.
Elger Esser is represented by Galerie Tanit Beirut.
