With an average rainfall of less than 100 mm Qatar has one of the driest landscapes worldwide. In a case of emergency the water reserves would only be sufficient for 48 hours in 2016 (for 7 days in 2026)…

Extreme temperatures of up to 50 Degrees Celsius in summer create a vital dependence on air condition, that became part of a daly modern life in the gulf region.

The continuous dripping of condensate released by cooling systems, creates the possibility of new life in an otherwise hostile environment.

This often results in a greening “by-product”, a plant that seeks to thrive in total, fragile dependence on a technological achievement of modern civilization.

Artist Biography

Georges Yammine was born in Lebanon at the end of the seventies.

He received his first violin lessons at the conservatory in Beirut, and six years later, in 1999, he was honored a scholarship from the “West Eastern Divan” Orchestra founded by Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said to study in Germany at the “Franz Liszt” Hochschule für Musik in Weimar.

Since 1999, during a multitude of worldwide tours with the West Eastern Divan Orchestra, he discovered photography to be a second way of expressing himself, which enabled him to capture musical connections visually and to experiment with movement and forms.

The pictorial book “Spark of Hope”, which was published in 2014 by Corso publisher in Germany, reflects this phase. Georges Yammine has been a member of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra since 2008. He lives between Qatar, Lebanon and Germany and works internationally as an independent photographer.

His works has been collected by foundations such as: Barenboim Said Foundation/Berlin, Schloss Arenberg Salzburg/Austria
