Lamia JoreigeA strange feeling of familiarity Lamia Joreige was born in Beirut in 1972. She gained a BFA (Painting, Filmmaking) from Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, USA in 1995 and has written, directed and produced works ranging from short videos to multimedia installations and documentaries. She uses archival documents and fictitious elements to reflect on the relationship between individual stories and collective histories, highlighting the gaps in history and memory and exploring the impossibility of accessing a complete narrative. Joreige’s practice tends to encourage active participation from the viewer, adding another level to the notion of subjective histories. Her work has been shown extensively, in both a solo and group context including Sharjah Biennial; Venice Biennale; Goteborg Biennial; International Center of Photography, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Roskilde, Denmark; Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin; Nicéphore Niépce Museum, France; Townhouse gallery, Egypt. Publications include the art compendium Time and the Other (Alarm Editions, Beirut, 2004) and fiction Ici et peut-être ailleurs (H.K.W., Berlin, 2003).
